As an avid journaller, I go through notebooks quickly. Usually my journals are pretty cheap so it's only a matter of time before they start to fall apart.
Ever since I was a freshman in high school I've reconstructed and collaged the covers of journals, folders and composition notebooks. Back then it seemed like a great way to add some pizzaz and maybe even to assert my identity. However, now reconstructing & collaging journals stems from my practice of customizing everything I touch. (more on that in a future podcast!)
Here's what you need:
Gorilla Tape (to laminate)
*Paint Markers (or craft supplies of your choice)
Paper / Images to collage
My most recent journal was hanging on by a thread, so I thought it was a great opportunity to capture the process. This collage is pretty simple as I've always been a fan of minimalism, but I think it captures my current vibe perfectly. I also added a few doodles on the cover as a final flourish.
Customize your journal with doodles or personal photos
Each journal is an opportunity to do something different, and push your ideas further (or in a new direction entirely). I find putting the pieces together and figuring out the best way to create the front pockets to be the most exhilarating part because it forces you to really think about the design (which is why I haven't included a step by step guide... I have complete and utter faith that you can figure it out!) I usually put on my favorite music (currently it's Toro y moi's album Boo Boo) and play around with different ideas until I find something that works. Either way, it's meant to be fun, so if you make a mistake try to incorporate it into the final product!
